CONTEMPORARY CLINICAL PRACTICE- PSYCHOTHERAPEUTIC STRATEGIES

From the perspective of Psychodramatic Analysis, strategy should be based on two pillars: 1) Working on neurotic conflicts- at the source of the symptoms: psychosomatic diseases, dysfunctions, etc; 2) Help individuals to develop internal continence, which is not just due to lack of limits, but also a result of difficulty in finding stable references. Different from old Freudian repressed egos, our work is not about “decompressing” over-compressed egos anymore. It is more about helping them to develop self-contention. This is what Dias calls Contour Psychotherapy. Finally, it is not entirely true that we have weakened superegos nowadays. It presents itself on other terms. According to Dunker[1], there are new social inclusion and exclusion parameters that work as “prescriptive superegos”. They show themselves as permanent demands of entrepreneurism and renewal of loving and sexual relationships. Nature of Life and relationships have become unstable. This is the new social psychological ground and it brings a great deal of anguish, especially regarding direction in life. Anyway, our interest is to think of how emotional suffering today, is not only but also a reflection of this background. This is the theme of the next essay. From our perspective, clinical strategy with todays’ teenagers and adults is, besides the work on neurosis, to help them find genuine references in very flexible internal worlds, as well as an authentic direction in life, without preconceived models. On the other pillar, the work is to help them to be aligned with the expectation of being increasingly creative, which will not happen at the expanse of finding a direction in life[2]. The key to maturity lies on Self integration[3].
