ANGUISHES IN ADULTS' SEXUAL INTERACTION

Updated: Oct 21, 2022

Continuing the previous Post, if people have reached this stage without having developed blockages in their sexual identities, they will have them completed, which means they are psychologically equipped to fully enjoy erotic and sexual intimate relationships. They are ready for sexual interaction. If this is the case, people don’t have anguishes regarding avoided sexual partners because they have well-structured feminine and masculine idealized sexual identities. If transition stage is concluded people can have full sexual energy discharges and enjoy intimacy in erotic/sexual relationships. Broadly speaking, they don’t have sexual identity blocks . Sexual blocks, at this stage, are usually linked to sexual, moral and/or religious oppression /repression. These blocks make it more difficult for people to explore sexual/erotic intimacy and complicity in relationships, because they are commonly full of shame, guilt, fear and/or disgust. It means that, besides bias and discrimination, people’s difficulties in admitting who they really are or in fully enjoying sexual interaction maybe huge because of their own sexual and moral rigidity. However, differently from anguishes in sexual identity blocks (that are hidden) these conflicts are often overflowing with anguish and, for this reason, “accessible” to be treated in psychotherapeutic settings. People often bring the theme up deliberately to be discussed and treated. We consider them functional blocks. To be continued on the next Post

In clinical practice we deal with mild retention(blocks) cases that, however, don’t impede sexual identity conclusion. Retentions/blocks will be probably brought to light in random situations that demand a higher eroticization. They are partial blocks. For now, it is enough to know the right criteria to recognize typical blocks in each stage of sexual identity development and to distinguish them from circumstantial ones.
